Tent Caterpillars Eeewww!

The tents they are popping up — the invasion has begun.

If you’ve been driving around enjoying the spring flowers, you may also have noticed that the dreaded tent caterpillars, alias tent worms, alias army worms, are starting a little earlier this year.

Keep an eye out in your yard, especially if you have ornamental trees, such as crabapples, etc. — they like those. Here’s what you can do. At first site of tree infestation, wait until early morning or late at night (when all the worms are back to their camp); then either cut the infested branch off and burn the worm-infested web, or if you don’t want to cut the branch, then there is the chemical attack option — spray with an insecticide called Sevin. You may have to do this several times. Wear gloves and proper safety clothing when spraying, follow directions on mixing and applying.

Any of your garden centers will sell Sevin or an appropriate insecticide. They can offer suggestions as well. If you trees are beyond just trimming off a small branch, or a small web, then call a professional.
