If you’re thinking about installing a patio, one of the most important things to consider is how big should the patio be. Think about how you want to use that space:

How much furniture will you be putting in that space?

What is the table size?

How many chairs will you have?

Other patio items such as a grill, portable fire pit, children’s furniture?

Adequate space must be allotted to move around the seating area without stepping off the patio. Will there be a grill on the patio? You will need room for the grill as well as space for the cook to stand. If there are steps onto the patio, there should be a 3-foot open area at the base of the steps for access.

One of the easiest ways to determine space requirements is to lay down a rope or garden host to outline the patio perimeter area. If you already have a grill and patio furniture, set them within the outline to make sure there will be enough room.

Adjust the size of the patio, as needed, so that you can easily walk around without bumping into furniture, or falling off the steps. A little bit of planning before construction starts will ensure a functional patio space and a happier homeowner.
